Our daily bread

no_breadTogether We Cope food pantry is experiencing a critical shortage of bread, a staple of the food assistance provided to more than 50 families per day that rely on the pantry for groceries.

The pantry has benefited from tremendous generosity by local grocery stores which regularly donate unsold bread and bakery goods to TWC's pantry. However, in recent weeks some stores needed to reduce those donations as they deal with various budget issues. Together We Cope is a Chicago Food Depository agency, but bread is not always available from the depository.

Food pantry clients use sliced bread to supplement meals or, in many cases, for the meal itself. From toast at breakfast, to peanut butter and jelly sandwiches at lunch, to grilled cheese sandwiches for dinner, bread is the anchor of the menu for many families. Without this staple, hunger looms for many south suburban residents.

Donations of bread, especially sliced bread, can be made at Together We Cope's office (at the rear door) at 17010 South Oak Park Avenue inTinley Park on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon.

If it is more convenient to send money for this effort, a donation of $10 will buy 20 loaves of bread for the food pantry. Donations can be addressed to "Bread Drive," Together We Cope, 17010 South Oak Park Avenue, Tinley Park, IL 60477.

To conduct a food drive to benefit TWC , contact Carol Ettema at (708) 633-5040.

The shelves are nearly bare of bread and bakery items at Together We Cope's food pantry in Tinley Park.
