Glen, 25 and Carrie, 24 are really hoping that trouble does “come in 3’s” because if it is true, then they are done having disasters.  In October of 2005, Glen injured himself at work and is now receiving Worker’s Compensation, but only at a fraction of his usual pay as a laborer.  His injury is so severe that he is still receiving physical therapy three times a week, and he expects to regain about 75% of his normal physical ability.  In April, 2006 while Glen and his wife Carrie were walking their dog during a nice spring day, they received a cell call from a neighbor to report their home was on fire. Rushing back, they found their home was a complete loss and were only able to salvage about 10% of their belongings.  To make matters worse, a few days later Glen’s grandmother died.  Bewildered and unsure of how to proceed, Glen came to Together We Cope.

To help this couple immediately, Together We Cope supplied them with clothing, bedding and small appliances from the resale shop.  Merchandise certificates from a retail outlet were also provided so Glen and Carrie could purchase items not available in the Sensible Shoppe.  They received food from the Together We Cope food pantry to take back to the trailer they were renting from a friend.  To help stretch their funds, Together We Cope will allow the couple additional food pick-ups over the next few months.

Because Glen will not be able to return to his previous type of employment, he was referred to National ABLE Network and POET to help him find direction for a new career.  He was also given information about South Suburban College to help get the education needed for a new field of employment.  The intake worker went over the couple’s budget with them to help find other ways to cut their monthly expenses so they can get back on their feet.

Like most people coming to Together We Cope, Glen and Carrie were able to find a sympathetic ear and practical assistance during a bleak period of their lives.  We understand that the folks from St. Damien church  will also assist this family, and we referred them to the Salvation Army Disaster Service.  We are confident that in a few months, they will be on their own again.
