“I learned that it is important to ask for help when you need it and even more importantly, to lend a hand when others are in need.”
Cathy became a widow suddenly at age 34. While dealing with the tragedy of losing her husband, she faced caring for her two children, ages 2 and 6, and dealing with financial hardship. Cathy knew she had to act in order to keep her small family intact and move forward. After much deliberation, she painfully contacted Together We Cope.
Cathy met with Ann Rodgers, a Together We Cope intake worker. “I was a little embarrassed about asking for help, but Ann put me at ease immediately.” Cathy said. “I didn’t feel judged or uncomfortable because Ann treated me like a friend who needed some help and not a person looking for a hand out.” Cathy left Together We Cope that afternoon with groceries for her family, and was able to use a voucher in the Sensible Shoppe to buy some clothing and shoes for herself and her children.
Over the course of the last two years, the staff has worked closely with Cathy, linking her to employment resources, helping with school supplies for the children, and providing food from the pantry when needed. Together We Cope was also able to offer some financial assistance for her first month’s rent when she located an affordable apartment and helped with some minor utility bill payments.
Good news to report! Once the basics were covered, Cathy was able to concentrate on finding an affordable new home for her family (at a reduced rate in exchange for her doing maintenance), and a new job where she is currently enrolled in a management training program. Her children are settled and doing well in their new home and school.
“Cathy has always been a survivor – it was so exciting to see her finally able to step beyond mere survival to having a real future” said Rodgers.
Cathy’s future is bright, due to her determination to succeed and the commitment of the Together We Cope staff. Everyday there is a new story and everyday there is the potential to make a difference in someone’s life. “I learned that it is important to ask for help when you need it and even more importantly, to lend a hand when others are in need.” Cathy stated. “Now that I am back on my feet, I look forward to volunteering and helping others at Together We Cope.” |
