Christina is planning her way out of a bad situation.  Her plan is almost complete, but there’s one gap in her budget.

She is alone and pregnant for the first time. Her previous relationship has ended and now she is sleeping on the sofa at her mom’s house, where a large family fills a small home. Her baby is due shortly, and she won’t have the privacy of a bedroom when he arrives. What’s more, she needs a few months leave from her restaurant serving position after the birth and there will be no income during that time.

When she came to us for help, we were very impressed with how far Christina had gone in her preparations for a new life as a single mother. She showed us a budget in detail. Her plan calls for her to work right up till her due date, putting in extra hours on management duties at the restaurant. She is banking everything she earns. She has found an affordable apartment and can pay the rent for the two months of her maternity leave, after paying a security deposit. But she knows she’ll be late with the next month’s rent after returning to work, and is worried about that gap. And then there will be the baby’s needs.

Christina is very close to self-sufficiency. We thought that someone who knows how to work so hard and plan ahead deserves a helping hand.

Christina asked if we could pay a portion of one month’s rent, but instead we paid the security deposit on her apartment. That freed up her funds to pay rent the month she returns to work. We will give her groceries once a month, as well as clothing for herself and the baby. We’ll help with baby furniture.

“I can’t believe someone would just step in and help me like this,” Christina said. “I was so surprised, and so grateful. I didn’t know there was a place like this, where people help strangers in trouble. I’m so glad I called you.”
