These are tough times for our neighbors caught in the throes of the worst recession in recent history, and now the other shoe has dropped.

People come to places like Together We Cope for help in a bad economy, yet these very agencies are now facing major funding shortfalls because of the continued recession. Together We Cope is not alone in this regard. Many health and human service agencies get greater support from state government than we do here at Together We Cope, and as a result they are getting hurt worse in the state budget crunch.

Together We Cope has been impacted somewhat by state cuts in social service funding, and we’ve also seen other grant funding reduced as money becomes scarce. We are working hard to fill in the gaps and make up some of the shortfall, but many of our regular donors are dealing with their own hard times right now. In some cases where we expected financial support this year, it’s just not coming through.

There are some bright spots on the horizon. Federal stimulus money is beginning to trickle down from agencies that get this money from the federal government and move it along to places like Together We Cope. We expect to have some funding available shortly to help our neighbors who need mortgage and rent assistance.

What can you do to help? I guess the answer to that question is: Anything at all counts in times like this. Never before has the small $10 donation been more meaningful. Never has a bag of food been more critical, or a food drive to stock our pantry more appreciated.

It’s what Together We Cope stands for, neighbors standing together to weather the storm. In all my years here, I’ve never seen that resolve falter and it strengthens my faith in human beings. Through his recession, like all other crises before it, together we will cope.
