Finally – the promise of warmth and new life as spring descends on us! We hope the economy is in line for a similar rebirth soon. The recession has kept us very busy of late, working with so many area families impacted by the poor economy. We are grateful for the loyal support of our friends and donors in our mission to assist families in crisis.

It was especially gratifying to see so many of these supporters on the red carpet during our annual “Night on the Town” dinner dance and silent auction at the Odyssey Country Club  in February. It was fun celebrating with old, and new, friends.

It occurs to me that we focus so intently on strengthening individual families in our work at Together We Cope, that we lose sight of the fact our work actually builds stronger communities in our southern suburbs. We involve local churches, businesses, neighborhoods, organizations, families and individuals in our work, thus strengthening their commitment to community. When a neighbor stumbles, Together We Cope harnesses the resources and energy of hundreds to come to that neighbor’s aid. So many times we’ve later witnessed such a neighbor lend a helping hand to someone else, carrying on the tradition of community.

As our agency has grown over the years, and continues to grow, the problems of the people we meet continually change. The current economy has put its own mark on those problems. We see everything from young families facing home foreclosure to senior citizens struggling to pay for prescription medicine. Our Families First program, for example, is working hard to put neighbors in trouble on a path to self-reliance.

What seems never to change is the resolve of our community to meet problems head on and find a solution. We enjoy our role of bringing those in distress together with those who can fix the problem.

There’s an old German proverb that says: “Charity sees the need, not the cause.” We are blessed with a network of support that sees the need in our community and takes action, rather than merely debate the cause of our problems.
