From the Director
Portrait of Kathryn StranieroAs the Executive Director of Together We Cope, I care very deeply about all who come to us for assistance in their time of crisis.  In this section, I will highlight the needs of our community and some of the accomplishments of Together We Cope as expressed to me by those families we assist.  Please remember that you are the support for those families and for our community.  Every day and in every way we all make a difference by helping those families in need.  Please send me a note to let me know what we can do to assist families in your neighborhood.  Please email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. SterlingFamilyChildren believe anything is possible, and that can bring surprising results.

Take 7-year-old Emiyah Twietmeyer of Tinley Park, for example. She heard there were hungry children in the south suburbs, and began knocking on doors in her neighborhood. She and her mom brought in 500 pounds of food to Together We Cope’s pantry a week later.

Or consider Alex Rogers of Tinley Park, who is 17. He thought organizing a food drive for Together We Cope would be a good Eagle Scout project and collected more than one ton of food.

The five little Sterling brothers of Palos Park came into Together We Cope with their mom to deliver gifts for a family in our Christmas Adopt-a-Child program. Bronson, Truman, Hudson, Griffin and Parker were serious about making Christmas happy for children in need.

At Together We Cope we put a lot of emphasis on programs that help children, especially during this recession that has hit south suburban families so hard. The economists say the recession is ending, but unemployment certainly is not and that means we have to push harder to make sure the children are taken care of during these troubled times.

The families we help at Together We Cope are used to being self-sufficient and often don’t know how to ask for help in a sudden crisis. Many times, what brings them to our door is that they need something for their children. We are committed to answering that call, whether it is for food or clothes or school supplies, and are so pleased that other children become our partners in these endeavors.

Children get the message instantly when there is need, and they believe they can fix anything in this world. Whether it is collecting pajamas for homeless children or pennies for earthquake victims in Haiti, they take the mission seriously. We can learn so much from them. We are proud to partner with them.
