Carol sees the face of need up close every day in Together We Cope’s food pantry, where about 2,500 families get groceries every month. It has touched her deeply, leading her to believe “no one in this country should go hungry.”
Carol began working in 1997 after retiring from a 24-year career with Nabisco. She served as office manager and volunteer coordinator at Together We Cope before becoming the manager of the food pantry. “I stayed home about one month after retiring, and I realized I couldn’t do that,” she recalls. There hasn’t been just one person who has influenced Carol at Together We Cope, but rather the whole environment. “I was sitting at my desk and kept hearing the stories of the people coming in for help. I wanted to take them home and write a check for every one of them. I knew that really wasn’t possible and almost quit because it is so sad. I had everything I needed, and they didn’t. I realized then that I needed to do what I could to help in any way possible,” she said. Carol also puts a lot of energy into Together We Cope’s fundraising efforts. “I just try to do everything I can to make every event the best so it brings the most funding,” she said. “The best thing about working in the food pantry is you get to meet the people and see the joy on their faces. Sometimes there are also tears. They are just so grateful we are helping them. I just give them a hug and tell them we are here to help them,” Carol said. |
