Ask anyone at Together We Cope how the agency manages to fulfill its broad mission, and the answer invariably will be: “This place runs on volunteers.”
Managing the 100-plus volunteers who donate their time and talent to the food pantry, resale shop and office operation is Cate Dietz. Coming to Together We Cope as a volunteer herself in 2000 while going back to school for a second college degree, she became a staff member the following year. Cate’s previous career as a corporate purchasing manager made her a logical choice for appointment to office manager at Together We Cope, where she keeps everyone organized and functioning. One person who has made a big impression on Cate is Kathryn Straniero, Together We Cope’s executive director. They met when Cate visited the resale shop when Together We Cope was still based in Oak Forest. “We had a nice conversation, and I was very impressed with her and her overview of this organization,” Cate recalls. As to what Cate enjoys most about her work with Together We Cope, she says simply: “It’s what we do, helping others.” |
